I started my career as a journalist and spent the nineties living and working in London. In the early noughties I moved to Sydney, where I studied for my Masters. By the time I returned, a combination of recession and technological change were changing the nature of journalism in a way I did not like. The journey towards ‘fake news’ had already begun, so I moved into wider communications work – preferring to write for projects that focused on social issues.
While living in Australia I learned to surf. This opened my eyes to the power and importance of connecting with nature. Back home in the UK, I felt that something was missing from my life. I was increasingly drawn to the natural world and increasingly upset by the environmental destruction I saw around me.
About seven years ago I realised that I needed to make a fundamental change. The need to connect with – and fight for – the environment was becoming more important than anything else. I started taking direct action and joined the anti-fracking movement. Eventually I decided to take time out from my regular life altogether and spent three years volunteering full time on organic farms. The joy and fulfilment I experienced working on the land – and the wonderful people I met – eventually led me to Sacred Earth. I’d finally found a place where my values were shared.
I’m now training to become a nature connection facilitator. I aim to combine this with my communications experience so that I can connect more people with the natural world. By strengthening this connection, I believe we can increase both people’s wellbeing and their concern for the planet.
