Libby Halford, our Elder, recently wrote about the traditional uses of Yarrow for us and it’s still in the garden due to our continuing warm days so we decided to include it here.   Thank you Libby!

From the first flush of snowdrops in early spring, nature’s garden puts on a dazzling show of white flowers right through until the final flush of Yarrow into September.  It’s a hardy thing, growing on verges and waste ground, spreading its seeds of healing potential widely.

This wonder plant with its profusion of small clusters of white (sometimes pinkish) flowers, on strong stems, and delicate feathery leaves is so common, offering us healing in so many ways.  The crushed leaves can be used to stop bleeding and prevent infection and, in Greek mythology, Achilles used them to heal his wounded warriors during the siege of Troy.  They’re not bad mixed into a salad too!

The flowers, taken as a tea, bring the gift of reducing fever and inflammation and to reducing high blood pressure.  I give gratitude for the healing medicine I have received over the last year as I have journeyed alongside this treasure.

This is the time to gather the flowers to use fresh in tea, or to dry them for use over the winter.  Before you pick, give gratitude and ask permission from Yarrow.  Before you drink, take a moment to connect with her spirit – her healing is deeper than the physical.  I have some in a vase by my computer and my connection deepens daily.

Plant medicine is very powerful.  If you want to use it intensively or over a long period of time, please do consult a herbalist.

Blessings on Yarrow.
